How we run polls
Who we ask, how we ask, and how we turn the answers into the numbers on this site.
8 short chapters
The rules on every poll page
- 1Each person answers a poll once.
- 2Every poll page shows the exact wording, the date and who we asked.
- *Groups under 50 people are marked * and read as a rough guide.
- –Groups under 30 people are not shown.
Who we ask
Adults aged 18 and over in each market we cover: the US and the UK. Everyone answers online, on a phone or a computer, through a research panel of people who have agreed to take surveys. Each person answers a poll once.
How we write the questions
We keep questions short and neutral and offer “Don’t know” where it fits. Where the order of the answers could sway people, we show them in a random order. Every poll page shows the exact wording we used.
When we ask
Every poll page shows the date we asked the question, so you always know how fresh a result is.
Checking the answers
Before we publish a poll we check every set of answers. We take out people who rush through, give the same answer to everything, contradict themselves or take part twice.
Matching the population
Weighting makes the people we asked match the population by age, gender, region and more. Each poll page says whether its results are weighted. How we weight.
Breaking results down
Every poll can be split by groups such as age, gender, income and how people voted. Groups under 50 people are marked * and should be read as a rough guide; groups under 30 are not shown.
Political polls
For questions about politics we show the full wording, the date, who we asked and whether and how the results were weighted, so anyone can check the numbers.
Questions or corrections
If you think we have made a mistake, tell us. We will check it and correct the page.
